California State PTA is partnering with CalKIDS to spread awareness about an incredible funding opportunity for California students and families. In 2022, the State of California launched the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS) with one clear mission: make it easier for children to save for their future education.
Through the CalKIDS program, students and families in California have the opportunity to start their college and career savings journey in just a few, simple steps. This program is a unique children’s savings account (CSA) that provides each child born in California and eligible low-income public school students with up to $1,500 for college and career training.

The SPC works with the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Child Development at the Stanford University School of Medicine to connect parents with a team of world-class experts.

Managing challenging behaviors delves into practical strategies, insights, and approaches for addressing children's challenging behaviors and fostering harmony in the family dynamic. The course contains four self-paced instructional modules, including videos, reflection exercises, and other resources. This course is taught by Stanford University School of Medicine faculty and staff, and is recommended for caregivers of children with a developmental age of 5-12 years. As a self-paced online class, it can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and registration is rolling. More information can be found here. Registration here.
#2, Caregiving Strategies for Teens with Emotional Challenges (Dec 4th, TBD)
Presented by Dr. Anaid Atasuntseva and Dr. Allison Vreeland from Stanford School of Medicine's Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, this webinar will review skills from Dialectical Behavioral Training, an evidence-based intervention for adolescents with strong and painful negative emotions including depression, anxiety, and anger. The focus will include the use of effective behavioral parenting skills, as well as strategies that improve parent-child relationships, with a particular focus on the use of validation techniques. These techniques have been shown to reduce conflict and promote emotion regulation in adolescents, benefiting both parents and children. The webinar will include a live Q&A session, and will be recorded.

FUHSD is shifting to a “Trustee Areas” model for electing its Board of Trustees, moving away from the “at large” system.
What this implies: Board members will now be elected from specific trustee areas, rather than by the entire District's voters. This does NOT alter the FUHSD school attendance boundaries. Other local entities have recently adopted this transition:

- City of Sunnyvale (for City Council) initiated this with the 2020 election.
- Sunnyvale School District began this with the 2022 election.

- Ed100, a free online course on California education, presented in brief lessons, as well as blogs on current issues
- EdSource, basic information about California’s public education system and up-to-date articles about issues that impact kindergarten through university education in California.
- California Legislative Information, official information on bills that are being considered by the state legislature.
- The State Legislative Analyst’s Office, a nonpartisan state office that provides research on various topics and analysis of the state budget.

The Summit STEM Fellowship is a virtual summer program which brings together top high school students around the world. Last year, over 200 students from 30+ countries joined the fellowship which impacted the next generation of leaders in STEM. The Summit STEM Fellowship opens to rising 9th-12th grade students, it aims to identify top students around the world and connect them with mentors from Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and other top institutions, to explore different opportunities and career pathways in STEM. The fellowship requires a commitment of 10-15 hours per week, allowing students to participate alongside other summer activities.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and students are encouraged to apply as early as possible. To learn more and apply, please visit www.summitstemfellowship.org.

Stress is part of life, but too much is dangerous for both our physical and mental health. Unfortunately, we often don’t recognize stress in our kids and in ourselves. Watch the Stressed Teens and Parents webinar, featuring Dr. Lynette Danylchuk, an expert on the subject, will discuss how to recognize and mitigate stress and associated behaviors. Dr. Danylchuk will be joined by Monta Vista Principal Ben Claunitzer and Monta Vista School-based Therapist Richard Prinz, who will discuss Monta Vista’s work in supporting students; and Monta Vista parent, Jaya Rupanagunta, who will share her family’s story.

Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., an expert on happiness and the author of three books on the subject including, The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want, will address this topic.
